Buffalo River Trail, portion south of Steel Creek (January, 2009)

From about 5 days away we saw the forecast of warm weather for a Saturday.  We tracked it all week and it just kept getting better, so the only question was which hike are we going to get out and do on January 3rd!

A group of us made the trek down from Springfield in the morning and after trolling up and down the Boxley Valley looking for elk, we headed to the Steel Creek campground to hike a 1½ mile stretch of the Buffalo River Trail.  This is where the trail starts; looking across the river at Roark Bluff.

The highest we saw the temperature on the car thermometer that day was 73º.  That combined with some afternoon sunshine made for a great day hiking.
