Modeled after the nation's capitol in DC, this is the 3rd capitol building, the second in Jefferson City; finished in 1918.

The grounds are absolutely incredible almost year-round.  The are elaborate fountains, gorgeous gardens and wide-open, well-manicured lawns.

A number of statues adorn the grounds like this one of Thomas Jefferson.

Rotunda from 1st/ground floor (left) and 2nd floor (right).  State seal is on the ground floor in the center.

Don't forget to look up!

Rotunda from the 3rd floor (left) and legislators offices on a 1st floor corridor (right).

Whispering Gallery (only accessible by private tour) and the 8,000 pound chandelier.
Whisper along the wall on one side and the other side can hear it!

The dome seen from the Whispering Gallery (left).  Ceiling of the Governor's Office (right).

A rare look inside the Governor's Office (not part of the normal tour).

This could be my favorite room in the whole building--the House Lounge.  The painting (along with others in the building) is by Thomas Hart Benton.

Here's the Senate Lounge, also very impressive.

The ceiling of the Senate Lounge.  Don't forget to look up no matter where you are in the building!

Structure and fireproofing on the inside of the dome ceiling.  It is a tight, steep climb to get to the outside of the top of the dome.

View to the north of the Missouri River from the top of the dome, just at the base of the Ceres (Demeter) statue.

View to the east of the Governor's Mansion and the Governor's Gardens.
Jefferson Landing, the Louis & Clark Memorial and the train station is just to the left of the photo.

Other parts of the Capitol Complex.  Left to right is the Missouri Supreme Court, Broadway and Truman Buildings (state offices), and St. Peter's Catholic Church.

Outside of the dome at night.  The statue at the top is the goddess of agriculture Ceres (Demeter).
The lore around Jeff City is that the bundle of grain she is holding, when viewed from the right angle on Capitol Avenue...well, it looks like what you see here.
