Walnut Canyon National Monument, Arizona (November, 2011)

Walnut Canyon National Monument is a neat little stop just outside of Flagstaff.  It was well worth the hour or so we spent looking around.

The serpentine canyon pictured is formed Walnut Creek takes a couple meanders and leaves a nice rock promontory that is called "The Island".  This feature, the creek, and the steep canyon walls allowed the Sinagua indians to live in the canyon up to 700 years ago.

As you can see by the sunbaked sides and shaded sides the natives that lived here utilized various spots seasonally to adapt to living at nearly 7,000 elevation.
