Abrams Falls, Great Smoky Mountains National Park (October 2008)

I said it wasn't a easy drive, right?  It was either pouring down rain, windy as all get out, or we were high on the Newfound Gap Road in the thick fog.  The wind was horrendous and we even heard later that it topped 70 mph.  At one point we were heading down Little River Road toward Cades Cove and a Park Ranger came whizzing by us heading the opposite direction with his lights on.  Twenty seconds later we, along with two other vehicles, came screeching to a halt with an 2 foot diameter dead tree completely across the road.  It had fallen between us and the park ranger.  Another guy and I eventually rolled it off the road.

We stopped for a quick restroom break at the Cades Cove picnic area (shown here) and enjoyed the wildlife.
