Alcatraz Island, San Francisco (June, 2004)

As a tourist destination Alcatraz Island is run by the National Parks Service.  Though it is in the National Park system, this isn't the greatest of their historic facilities.

The main tour is the Cellhouse tour and I'd recommend paying extra for the audio tour because there are lots of good stories.

However, the information about the facility and its history are just leaving a little to be desired.  A recent trip to Ellis Island (NYC) gave me a good frame of reference and it just seems like Ellis is much more informative.

Nonetheless, it is worth the $10 cost of the ferry ride to at least familiarize yourself with Alcatraz.
