Alcatraz Island, San Francisco (June, 2004)

This is the isolation block.  The solitary confinement cells are on the bottom.  The thick doors (open) could be closed and adjusted to create total darkness.  Some prisoners would spend 23 hours a day in complete darkness with no interaction.  To keep from going crazy one prisoner said he'd pull a button off of his shirt, throw it in the air wildly and then search on his hands and knees until he found it.  Then, he'd do it again...over and over and over.
