Of the locations we visited, Dalian, a metro
area of about 6 million people, was the most modern and
cosmopolitan. I saw very few bicycles, lots of expensive cars, and
plenty of impressive public infrastructure such as the transit
system (shown here). As Chinese
cities go it is a very young city with influences of the Russians
from the north, the nearby Koreans, the Japanese from occupation
before WWII, and even Europeans from the 1800’s and most everything
we saw was constructed in the last century. The Russians were
fascinated with the planning and design of Paris so the city has a
very European feel.
