Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida Keys (December, 2006)

Fort Jefferson is main attraction of the Dry Tortugas National Park.  Built in the mid-1800's this massive fortress had a strategic location to protect the Gulf and the Mississippi River port.  The name of the islands comes from the Spanish word for turtles (tortugas) and the fact that there is no freshwater on the islands (dry).

Located 70 miles west of Key West, the Dry Tortugas are 7 small little keys and have no permanent inhabitants.  Click here for a map.  They are reachable for most, via 2 ferry operators that run daily trips from Key West.  The trip takes about 2½ hours and costs about $140 a person (including breakfast, lunch and admission to the park and a tour).  But I will say this, consider what you are already paying and think seriously about the seaplane trip.
