Pine Island Area, Everglades National Park, Florida (December, 2006)

We woke up Saturday morning (December 23, by the way) on Long Key.  Drove to Miami and had several hours to spend in the Everglades before finding a late dinner in Miami and arriving at the Ft. Lauderdale airport around 5pm.

So we wanted a taste of the Everglades without having a full day to take it in.  In this situation, ask a ranger!  He pointed us to the Royal Palm area and the Anhinga Trail.  Wow!  What a great little hike.

The trail is basically a boardwalk and is only a ½-mile long, but the amount and diversity of the wildlife is incredible.  Though most all of the Everglades is a swamp, this area is centered around two large open ponds (pictured).  For the full view of this shot, click here.
