On this trip it was New York to New Jersey
to Chicago...lots of big cities! So, with a day to myself I
decided to checkout the nearest thing the National Parks Service had
to Chicago. That happened to be Indiana Dunes National
Lakeshore. The lakeshore stretches some 25 miles and preserves
not only the lakeshore but the associated dunes and wetlands.
It begins east of Gary, IN at the south tip of Lake Michigan.
In the middle of the National
Lakeshore is a portion controlled by the State of Indiana as a
state park.
In doing my initial research I
discovered 3 things: 1) You can take a train from downtown to the
park; 2) The park is only vehicle-friendly; 3) There are no bike
rental services within walking/transit reach. |
