The River Walk in San Antonio is certainly
one-of-a-kind. Many cities have tried to create modern,
improved versions of it but none have been able to replicate the
atmosphere and draw of the original in downtown San Antonio.
The Paseo del Rio (River Walk) was first
constructed in the 1920s and 30s to battle the flooding of the San
Antonio River. Built one story below street level is was also
designed from the outset to be a commercial district as well.
What strikes me most about the River
Walk each time I visit is the incredible landscaping--mature trees,
well-placed flower beds and plenty of natural rock. This short
of history provides the character that many of the modern-day
knockoffs can't accomplish. |
