Angels Landing, Zion National Park (June, 2007)

The total trail distance to the top is 2½ miles (one-way).  While the first bit starts out on a gradual climb, it quickly gives way to switchbacks and steep climbs, and again, it is exposed.  We took 2 liters of water with us for the hike and lunch at the top and it was about 1 liter too little.  We were thirsty by the time we hit The Grotto where there's potable water.

The view you see here is only about a third of the way up to Scout Lookout.  Here's a map showing the trail.

As you can see much of the steep parts of the trail to Scout Lookout are roughly paved.  This keeps erosion under control but also provides a nice level surface for more novice hikers.
