The first time we visited Zion (in 2005),
we ran across a group on horses in the backcountry. A
weathered, rugged old guy in the group was particularly chatty about
the parks of southwest Utah. He described Zion as more
"masculine" and Bryce Canyon as more "feminine." I'd never
heard someone describe natural areas that way but his thoughts
obviously stuck with me and, after thinking about his insight a
while I had to agree that they were right on. While Zion is
big and sharp and bold, Bryce holds just as much beauty but in more
subtle and intricate ways. In
many ways it makes a great sister park to Zion and many visitors to
the area take the time to spend at least a day or so in Bryce to see
its famed rock pinnacles called "Hoodoos" that you see here. |
