Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, St. Louis, Missouri (Sept, 2009)

As a globally recognized icon, the Gateway Arch has become synonymous with St. Louis.  But the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial is more than just the Gateway Arch.  There several other components that feature the westward expansion of the United States in the early 1800s.  However, the arch is a symbol for not only westward expansion but is probably the most recognized monument in the world.

The National Memorial is under the control of the National Park Service and is well worth a stop on your first visit to St. Louis, as well as any return trip.  Riding up to the top, hanging out on the lawn and catching glimpses of the arch from all over St. Louis, are a part of any meaningful trip to the city.
