As luck would have it, the Space Shuttle
Discovery STS-128 mission, scheduled originally for the last day of
July, had been rescheduled to launch early in the morning on
Tuesday, August 25th. With our flight not leaving until 5pm the
evening of the 25th we decided to forgo a planned trip to Sea World
in Orlando on Monday and try to go catch the launch.
We made the decision Sunday night
after monitoring the weather and the launch predictions for days.
I bought launch tickets to Kennedy Space Center online that required
we arrive before a 5:30pm cut-off. So we headed out from our
hotel in St. Petersburg at about 2:30pm. The drive took 2:15
and we arrived at Kennedy around 5pm. The great thing about
the space center is it ALL stays open well through a launch attempt.
