There are very few places in Washington
D.C. that you can't see the Washington Monument day or night. It
is an incredibly recognizable feature to all Americans and foreign
visitors as well. An interesting
little tidbit (directly from an NPS employee!) the color of the stone
changes about a quarter of the way up. (Visible in this photo.)
The reason is the monument was begun before the Civil War but
construction was halted due to the focus on the war. Afterwards,
when construction resumed the quarry was further down into a different
color of rock and therefore the variation. |
