Buffalo River Trail, portion south of Steel Creek (January, 2009)

Taking the BRT downriver from Steel Creek campground and Roark Bluff, you start climbing into the forest right away.  Even in the winter it is a pretty section of trail due to the presence of large beech trees.  In my opinion the trees look even better in the winter with the stark foliage drawing your attention to exactly how huge they are.  In addition they keep their leaves in winter, though they've turned brown, adding a bit of color to the otherwise dreary winter forest scenery.

One beech tree in specific really cracked me up.  It was bound and determined to grow where it started regardless of whatever stupid boulder tried to stay in its way!  Check it out!
