Buffalo River Trail, Horseshoe Bend to Erbie (May, 2003)

Like I said, the river was UP!

The crossing you are looking at here isn't even the tough one.  The tough one we call simply "the 3rd crossing" because it is the 3rd of 5 between Kyles and Hemmed-In.  The water is fast, the bottom is slick bedrock and large stones, and there is a deep pool upstream and a deep pool downstream.

To make matters worse, this day the waste deep rapids measured in at a comfortable 50 degrees!  But we made it across with Jonathan and I holding a guide rope while the group crossed.

The Ponca low water bridge measured 19" of air space.  (The USGS gage at Boxley rated 3.3 ft)
