Buffalo River, Ponca to Kyles Landing (March 2008)

In all the years I've been coming down to hike the area, I've never been able to float the Buffalo.  I've always wanted to but it isn't that easy.

The marquee section is from Ponca to Kyles Landing which is fairly far upstream.  The other issue is the drainage basin for the Buffalo is fairly small.  Water rushes in and then goes out again in hurry.  And, in the summer and fall, these upper stretches aren't even floatable.

Combine that with being gainfully employed and the window to float is pretty narrow.  It must be somewhat warm in (maybe) March, April, May or (maybe) June with recent rainfall on a Saturday or Sunday.  Oh, and then I've got to rent a canoe from an outfitter with a sizeable waiting list.
