Buffalo River, Ponca to Kyles Landing (March 2008)

So when the heavens opened on a Tuesday and Wednesday in late March, my buddy Brent started eyeing the gages.  The river took on a TON of rain and 3 to 4 days before I took this photo the water was 19 feet above this point of the river.  (Shown by the white arrow.)

But like I said, it drains in and out quick and by Saturday morning the put-in was packed.  Lots of folks were donning BOC (Buffalo Outdoor Center) gear but plenty of other river rats were there with their own gear.

This is the launch point just feet below the low water bridge at Ponca.  Pictured is the Highway 74 bridge.  There's no mercy for a rocky start.  While waiting during the shuttle Brent's girlfriend Taylor watched one canoe dump 20 feet into their float.
