Overview, Flagstaff, Arizona (March, 2010)

Since we'd been in Sedona biking and were finishing out the day in Flagstaff, we decided to take the scenic route up Highway 89A instead of trekking back to the I-17.  Great decision!

The highway leaves Sedona (4500 feet ASL) and climbs through Oak Creek Canyon which is gorgeous.  It heads past Slide Rock State Park and heads up some crazy switchbacks to this place, Oak Creek Vista Campground, at 6500 feet ASL.  We saw more and more snow here and there but once we topped the switchbacks the sun was setting and the air was much cooler, around 45º.  We were starting to feel like skiing was getting closer!

Just as I snapped this photo Mel spotted a herd of elk moving through the trees.
