Mountain Preserves, Phoenix, Arizona (March, 2010)

Ever since my first trip to Phoenix years ago I've been enamored by the desert peaks in and around the area.  Most people who have not been to Phoenix don't realize the make up of the topography is this complex.  The Valley of Sun is about 40 or 50 miles wide and rests at about 1100 feet above sea level.  What is interesting is it's dotted with mountain peaks that rise an additional 1500 feet off the valley floor.  As you can see the views are impressive!

There are a number of them and each is a park area with trails to the top.  In fact, South Mountain Park is the largest municipal park in the country!  The largest peaks are referred to as the seven summits of Phoenix and this article from AZCentral.com has become a mission for me!
