At about ¾ of a mile you begin to
encounter a new look to the forest. The oaks and pines are
badly burned from what the FS website mentions as a 1996 fire but
this could also be more recent damage from the Brins Mesa Fire from
the previous summer (and the FS might not have updated their
website, which wouldn't surprise me in the least.)
There are plenty of opportunities to
view burned trees up close and see the regrowth that occurs after a
fire.
There were also temporary signs
posted showing the Sterling Pass Trail was closed due to landslide
and flash flood danger caused by the burned hillside being more apt
to slides and dangerous floods. |
