Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, Indiana (June, 2008)

Once I hopped off the train at the station, I went inside the small, unmanned station to find an ATM (woohoo!)...that was broken.  (Not good.)  To make it worse, there's a pocket of no cell service around the station. (Really not good.)

So using the cache of Google Maps on my phone to guide me I decided to hoof it the 1 mile south (away from the lake) to the NPS visitors center pictured here.  I headed down "Main Street" (pictured next) and played frogger across the US Highway 20 / Indiana Highway 49 interchange.  The visitors center was nice, but no ATM.  And, the 90 year old volunteers dishing out birding advice had hardly heard of an ATM so the only advice I got was 2 miles south to a grocery store.  I offered to purchase something and get cash back that way.  No dice.
