Most of the historic buildings were erected between 1880 and 1910 during an economic boom for San Diego.  Intended to take advantage of the San Diego Bay, the area quickly became a contrast of a commerce center and redlight district.  After an economic downturn the Gaslamp was ignored until the mid-1970's when the revitalization began.

It is about 4 blocks wide and about 10 blocks long.
