Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, Florida (August 2009)

This was a good thing because the launch was scheduled for 1:36am Tuesday morning.  We followed NASA's updates on Twitter during the drive and also when toured around the space center.  Everything was on schedule for a perfect night launch.  Tanking began at 4:11pm and the crew headed out to the shuttle just before 10pm.

While all this was going on we started our tour of Kennedy.  Of course, our first stop needed to be the full scale model of an orbiter and a set of actual solid rocket boosters with an external fuel tank.  Dubbed Space Shuttle Explorer (There have been 5 orbiter vehicles and one prototype, none named Explorer.), the model gives you a good feel for the scale and the components of a shuttle.
