Zion Canyon Area, Zion National Park, UT (May, 2005)

With a trip to Las Vegas and a few extra days to spend in the desert southwest our initial discussions started with a backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon.  But after looking at the difficulty of getting a permit, the required campground-style camping, and the limited number of trails we decided to take a close look at Zion National Park.  What a good move that turned out to be!

Zion is a beautiful part of the circle of incredible parks in southern Utah and Northern Arizona and a bit different than the other parks as well.  The red rock canyons that make up Zion are fairly green yet exhibit the desert scenario you expect in this part of the country.  The best part is it is only 2 hours from Vegas and the drive includes a surprise, scenic trip through the Virgin River Narrows on I-15 in the NW corner of Arizona.
