Our trip to Zion was in late May and we
were greeted with a bit of a disappointing surprise. Flood
waters. We knew flash floods could be an issue and knew what to
do to keep on top of those, but nowhere on Zion National Park's
website was anything about the Virgin River's flow conditions and the
effects that would have on hikes.
This is the Virgin River flowing well over
its normal stage in the Temple of Sinawava. For a map of the
park click
here. Our shuttle driver (only shuttles are allowed on the
major road in Zion Canyon) told us that the normal flow for this time
of year on the river was 200 CFS. Pictured is 1,567 CFS.
For some video footage of the flow
(note the speed of the water), click
