Lincoln Memorial, Washington DC (August, 2004)

The focus of the Lincoln Memorial is very basic--a very stately and solemn statue of Abe Lincoln.

There were signs and a security guard making sure you were quiet on the top level of the memorial.  They also wouldn't let you take photographs.  That's just plain stupid.  I could understand FLASH photography, but a blanket policy of banning all photos is defeating the purpose of the monuments being accessible.
