Current River, Akers to Round Spring (July, 2007)

The Current is one of the best highlights of the many, many float streams in Missouri and the Ozarks.  The river is loaded with Class I and a few Class II rapids but nothing too difficult.  Yet the gradient, at least in the upper portions, is enough to keep the canoe moving fairly well.

Our journey, on an upper stretch, allowed us to paddle at a 5-6 mile per hour pace.  Including stops at all the interesting spots along the way we were on the water for 7 hours and paddled 21 miles.

The bluff shown here is par for the course throughout the trip.  Though the Buffalo River in Arkansas has more dramatic bluffs the Current has plenty and they all provide a bit of intrigue that you can't help getting caught up in each time you go past.
