North China, Introduction (May, 2007)

This was the first part of our trip and this absolutely fascinated me. To fly from Chicago to Beijing, a casual observer would guess there’d be a lot of time spent looking down on the Pacific Ocean. However, the quickest and best route is to fly up over the top of the earth, right past the North Pole. As a result views of the Arctic Ocean dominated the views during the flight.

It was late May so the large cracks are a normal part of the ocean and the “pack ice” that covers it.
