North China, Introduction (May, 2007)

As we looked down at the endless sheets of ice, we had several minutes of thought and conversation to whether or not we could actually see a polar bear from the air. We decided on “no”—too high and bears are white too—but the reason we talked about it so long is, there wasn’t much else to do.

This is the cabin of the 747 we flew over on. I mentioned that the trip was 9 days. But only 7 were spend in China because a day each way was spent cooped up in this flying tube. The actual flight time was 12 to 13 hours but after factoring in connecting flights on each end, delays and the usual time spent in airports it was well into 30 hours.
