First off, let me clear up a
misconception. Beale Street is not rundown, dangerous, or dirty.
At a point in the past it was, but since then Memphis (and Shelby
County) have really stepped up and restored Beale to a level of
quality worthy of the millions of visitors it sees each year. One of the reasons is the strong police presence. Everything from the Shelby County Sheriff's Dept., the Memphis Police, and the Metro Gang Unit were in great abundance. As a result we didn't see anything criminal go down the two nights we were there. Note the four cops in the picture that I didn't even intend to photograph. I'd say it was 10 people to every cop. |
