Central Park, New York City (July, 2003)

One of the more famous statues in the park, Balto, the Husky sled dog, was one I had to see.  Normally it wouldn't have been that big of a deal, but on the flight out I was reading my August 2003 issue of National Geographic Adventure.  I got into the story of Nome, Alaska and the 1925 outbreak of diphtheria that threatened to kill the whole town.  The delivery of antitoxin was only going to make it by a 675 mile dogsled run.  Finishing the run just in time was a tough rookie dog named Balto.  The story ended by saying that the rest of the U.S. followed the story so closely, that less than a year later the city of New York erected a statue in the dog's honor.  After that I had to find the tribute!  =)
