Independence Mall, Philadelphia, PA (September, 2003)

In the middle of the Independence Mall is a small largely glass building that houses the famous Liberty Bell.  A park ranger is on hand to tell stories about the bell and clear up a lot of myths about the bell.

Though the facility is nice a new one was well underway (right side of the photo) and the bell will be moved into the new building next month.  To get a close-up of the whole bell click here.

About the famous crack...It was a hairline crack.  Bells don't sound good with a hairline crack because the metal vibrates against the metal.  To fix that, bell makers drill out the crack to stop the vibrations.  Click here to see.
