Overview, St. Petersburg, Florida (August, 2009)

With the beach as a major objective we did lots of research a head of time.  We asked a few people, browsed tourism bureau websites, etc, etc.  Bottom line is you still have to feel your way.  We heard that Clearwater has great beaches and that Caladesi Island is awesome.  You have to take a ferry and are limited to 4 hours on the island.  With the afternoon storms and the late start time of the ferry (10am) that wasn't going to work.  We acted on a tip and checked out Indian Rocks Beach first (at 12th Street).  It sucked--no good sand.  We must have not been in right place.

Finally we hit St. Petersburg Beach Park.  St. Pete's Beach is right at the end of the Pinellas Byway (Highway 682; $0.50 toll) and the park is on Gulf Boulevard at 46th Street.  Goregous beach!
