Zion Canyon Area, Zion National Park, UT (May, 2005)

Our intended hike was to see the gem of Zion, "The Narrows."  This can be done from the headwaters and out the end of the canyon for a terrific 2-day backpacking trip.  But this effort included advance permits and some technical rope work so we decided to try the dayhike from the mouth up into "The Narrows" and see the most dramatic parts of the canyon.  At some points the canyon walls are only 20-30 ft. wide and as much as 2,000 feet high.

The view here is the flooded mouth of the Narrows where the paved "Riverside Walk" trail ends and the narrows adventure begins.  From this point on there isn't a true trail and navigating sometimes includes crossing the Virgin River in knee to waist deep water.  Not this year...and not until late July is what park officials are predicting.
